In an earlier post I had written a story of the creator of the cooperative dairy union AMUL in India. “Verghese Kurien (1921-2012) is considered the Father of the White Revolution in India. He is also known as the ‘Milkman of India’. He was responsible for moving India from a milk powder importing country to becoming self-sufficient in milk and milk products. He is credited with creating a series of institutions in Anand, a small town in the Western state of Gujarat, the AMUL Brand of milk products and its cooperative milk federation (GCMMF).”
The AMUL cooperative has since grown into a famous Brand in milk and milk products. One of the prime movers in this growth, besides the farmers, is R.S. Sodhi, MD, GCMMF (AMUL). We were fortunate that he joined us for a conversation on his journey and growth of AMUL in a Webinar. He is a down-to earth person with a sense of humour. After responding to numerous questions on the supply chain of AMUL he humorously described the model as C to C, Cow to Consumer, and B to C, Buffalo to Consumer. And in response to questions on use of Big Data in AMUL he ended with: “Amul is an IT company in a dairy business”.
